Two men suspected to have held hostage a clergyman who was headed home last night have been shot dead by police officers in Kiambu.

The suspects in company of two others, who managed to escape, reportedly hijacked 57-year-old Mr John Chege while he drove a white Nissan car and commanded him to drive towards Kiamumbi.

On learning of the incident, sleuths began pursuing the gang through separate routes before intercepting them along the way.

“In a well-executed plan to rescue the man of the cloth from the jaws of the bloodthirsty gang, the vehicle was finally intercepted some meters past Jacaranda,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigation said in a post shared on Twitter.

The suspects were ordered to stop but defied orders, prompting a shoot-out between them and the officers that left two suspects dead.

The officers managed to recover a knife and a pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition from the suspects.

Manhunt for the other criminals who managed to escape in the darkness has been launched.
