Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has lamented over rising cases of Covid-19 infections and deaths due to negligence and residents’ failure to comply with the Ministry of Health protocols meant to curb the spread of the disease.
The Governor expressed fears that continued failure by residents to heed the guidelines might worsen the situation in the county where more than 100 patients are currently in isolation with 18 patients on oxygen support and two in ICU.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Central Union Secretary-General Gor Goody said the hospital management was referring Covid-19 patients to the general wards, as bed space had run out in the isolation wards, which puts other patients at higher risk of contracting the disease.
Dr Goody said many hospitals in the region lack piped oxygen, needed by Covid-19 patients, forcing them to use concentrators that collect atmospheric oxygen.
According to the Ministry Of Health, Nyeri, Siaya, Murangá and Uasin Gishu are experiencing a surge in infections despite them being outside the zoned regions.
