Former US President Barrack Obama’s grandmother, Sarah Obama has died.
She died at Jaramogi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu on Monday morning a day after her admission following a short illness.
ODM leader Raila Odinga mourned Ms Sarah as a matriarch who promoted girls’ education and fought social ills.
“She was a symbol of resilience and confidence of African woman with her unique capacity to face life challenges. She utilized her grandson’s rise to promote the education of girls…,” Mr Odinga shared on Facebook.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said Ms Sarah was a philanthropist who helped mobilize funds to pay school fees for many orphans and vulnerable children.
“She was always very charming and not only a role model to the larger Obama family but a motherly figure to many people,” Prof Nyong’o said.
