At least 10 people have died, 20 seriously injured and four escaped with slight injuries in road accidents along Isiolo town-Maili Saba road in the last seven months, all attributed to motorists recklessness and failure to observe traffic rules.
The fatalities include five pedestrians, two passengers, a driver and rider according to police reports seen by the Press Point.
The blackspots in Isiolo include the town market area, Agnex Supermarket diversion to the county offices and the Isiolo International Airport junction according to Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander George Kariuki.
More worrying is that the three fatalities on Meru side occurred between Maili Saba shopping centre and a sharp corner about 100 metres past the centre towards Meru town, popularly known as Kona Mbaya.
The recent incident happened on November 4 when driver Mukunu Kisanga, 47, heading to Isiolo rammed into an electric post on the side of the road and died on the spot. Police reports indicate that the vehicle developed brake failure while descending the hilly area.
It is at the same point that an 11-year-old boy Evans Mawira, walking by the roadside, was knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hilux vehicle as the driver tried to negotiate the corner.
Buuri Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Asugo said a public inquest into the incident was underway.
While aboard a lorry from Nanyuki towards Isiolo in mid-June, Naftali Mwenda lost his life after the vehicle rammed into a tree at Mwangaza area while descending the steep Nyara area about 200 metres past the Isiolo airport junction.
A bodaboda rider Michael Baraka died on July 17, 2020 after he was hit by a personal car as he tried to overtake another vehicle at the Agnex diversion.
Barely two months later, Ms Habiba Ali Abdi died on the spot after a motorbike she was riding on was involved in an accident near the Isiolo town market where taxi operators park their vehicles by the roadside.
The motorbike was trying to overtake a milk lorry and upon seeing an oncoming vehicle went back to his lane only for the lorry to ram into the woman. The rider sustained severe injuries.
A pedestrian was mid last month hit by a vehicle at the Isiolo airport junction dying on the spot.
Police have warned of serious crackdown along the stretch during festive season to ensure no life is lost.
