Isiolo is set for a major milestone in access to energy in remote areas followimg the launch of the construction of solar minigrids by the Ministry of Energy through the Kenya Off-Grid solar Solar Access Project (KOSAP) in Kipsing, Oldonyiro ward.
The project is set to improve access to energy services for local businesses and residents who have for years remained out of electricity.
Energy PS Alex Wachira announced that the government was set to construct over 100 solar minigrids across 14 counties benefiting over 1.5Million people.
In Isiolo, five minigrids will be constructed in Kipsing, Eras Ha Boru, Malkadaka, Bassa and Gafarsa at a cumulative cost of Sh433 Million.
The Kipsing Mini-Grid is expected to benefit about 327 households and several non-residential consumers, including a primary school, dispensary, places of worship, and local shops.
PS Wachira maintained that the project was part of the government’s effort to improve livelihoods for marginalized communities remote parts of Isiolo, Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Narok, Taita Taveta, West Pokot, and Tana River.
“Power not only ensures progress but better living conditions for beneficiaries.The government is deliberate to enhance access to reliable energy to hard to reach areas of the country,” he said.
He added that the initiative was part of the government’s commitment to eradicate marginalization.
The solar-powered mini-grids will use battery storage technology to supply electricity to homes, schools, health facilities, businesses, and institutions. The project is also expected to stimulate 24-hour business activities and job creation in local communities.
The initiative also seeks to improve access to water access through solar powered boreholes.
The World Bank funded project is being implemented by the Ministry of Energy in partnership with the Kenya Power and Lightening Company (KPLC) and the REREC.
